It is time to dust off some of those old favorite stories and get excited about FOLKTALES!
    The 2017 YWP theme is:

From Appleseed to Zeus and Everyone in Between.

Students in gradesK-1 will choose a folktale character from a favorite bedtime story and write about an imagined adventure they would have together.  Grades 2-3 will be writing fable sequels…..what might have happened after the original folktale was done. POKEMON GO will be part of the grade 4-5 project where students will short story from the viewpoint of a tall tale character as he/she plays POKEMON GO!
A Day in the Life of a Mythological Character is the topic for grades 6-8 and will consist of several journal entries which document the comings and goings of this type of character as they go about their day. The high school category topic is to write an original folktale after researching Pour quoi Tales from around the world.
All teachers who are thinking of participating in this project need to register by December 1, 2016 and must be a member of NDRA. Membership information is available at A complete packet of writing guidelines and the necessary forms are already on the website under the YWP tab.
Winners will be announced in May of 2017. If you have any questions, please contact

    Jumpstart's Read for the Record®

Jumpstart is a national early education organization that is leveling the playing field so that all children are ready for kindergarten. We recruit volunteers and partner with preschools in under-resourced communities to help children develop the language and literacy skills they need to set them on a path for academic and lifelong success.

Jumpstart’s Read for the Record® was launched over a decade ago to address the educational inequities that leave too many children unprepared for kindergarten. On Thursday, October 27, 2016, children and adults will gather to read, learn, and laugh as they join together for the world’s largest shared reading experience. This 24-hour celebration builds awareness, creates impact, and raises funds to bring Jumpstart to communities across the country.

Join us on October 27, 2016 by reading The Bear Ate Your Sandwich by Julia Sarcone-Roach, a classic tale of a bear’s epic journey and the mystery of one delicious sandwich!

     How Can You R-F-T-R?

    • Fundraise for the Record: Show your support for early education by making a donation
    • Take Action: Spread the word by getting your school, library, or community involved
    • Read for the Record: Read The Bear Ate Your Sandwich on October 27
