It is time to dust off some of those old favorite stories and get excited about FOLKTALES!
The 2017 YWP theme is:

From Appleseed to Zeus and Everyone in Between.

Students in gradesK-1 will choose a folktale character from a favorite bedtime story and write about an imagined adventure they would have together.  Grades 2-3 will be writing fable sequels…..what might have happened after the original folktale was done. POKEMON GO will be part of the grade 4-5 project where students will short story from the viewpoint of a tall tale character as he/she plays POKEMON GO!
A Day in the Life of a Mythological Character is the topic for grades 6-8 and will consist of several journal entries which document the comings and goings of this type of character as they go about their day. The high school category topic is to write an original folktale after researching Pour quoi Tales from around the world.
All teachers who are thinking of participating in this project need to register by December 1, 2016 and must be a member of NDRA. Membership information is available at A complete packet of writing guidelines and the necessary forms are already on the website under the YWP tab.
Winners will be announced in May of 2017. If you have any questions, please contact
